PWG: All Star Weekend 7 - Night Two DVD Review

1) Alex Koslov vs. Susumu Yokosuka
Very good way to start the show here with a well executed match such as this one. It was certainly much better than Night 1's opener. This was a Dragon Gate meets CMLL bout and the two styles meshed well. The match featured alot of submissions including an innovative surfboard on the ropes by Koslov. Some of each man's moves caught their opponent off guard since they had never wrestled before which made this match even better. It was interesting to see how they would respond to manuevers they had never encountered before. Solid match to start the show.

Match rating - ***

2) El Generico vs. TJ Perkins
Man, I've never seen a crowd hate TJ Perkins as much as they did here. In more recent PWG shows, the crowd is hot for him, but here they despised him as "TJ sucks" chants rang through the air. I was looking forward to this match as both men are well versed in their respective styles of technical, high flying, and submission wrestling. We saw an impressive move for move exchange to start the match which led to a stand off. Generico went for his signature kick early, but Perkins blocked it. After some back and forth action, Perkins took control and slowed the pace down to suit him. The match mainly stayed on the mat while TJ had control, but Generico rallied about half way through and brought some excitement back to the match. The ending to this match was amazing. El Generico hit a brainbuster on TJ ON THE APRON! Insane move! I bet TJ regrets
loosening the ropes early on the match so Generico couldn't hit the top rope brainbuster. It looked way more painful on the apron. Really good match.

Match rating - ***1/4

3) The Dynasty (Joey Ryan & Scott Lost) vs. Chuck Taylor & Vin Gerard
Since this was Taylor and Gerard's first time teaming together, I had low expectations for this match, but this turned out to be a really good tag match. Taylor & Gerard put their differences aside and ended up working well together. Gerard definitely impressed me more here than he did in his match with Jimmy Jacobs on Night 1. Scott Lost was the standout in this match as he is just a tremendous wrestler. Joey Ryan was enjoyable here as well, especially at the end where he channeled his inner Triple H by hitting the running knee then yelling "Time to play the Game!!" then he set up Chuck for the pedigree and ended up hitting a double pedigree on Chuck and Gerard. The finish came when Scott Lost locked both Taylor and Gerard in a sharpshooter. While this wasn't as good as last night's tag match, it was still very enjoyable and it exceeded my expectations.

Match rating - ***

4) Kevin Steen vs. Roderick Strong
It's Night 2 and Steen is still messing with the guy on the front row that he got into it with the night before. He works the crowd so well. The match finally gets started and these two immediately start throwing strikes and chops. Then they have a shoulder block battle that was very impressive, it lasted for around a minute until Steen nailed a crossbody to take Strong off his feet. These two worked pretty well together, but the finish felt very rushed. As Excalibur stated "Steen steals one from Roderick Strong". They were on their way to create a really good match, but it ended too early to earn any higher of a rating than what I'm giving it. Enjoyable while it lasted though so don't skip this one.

Match rating - **3/4

5) Low Ki vs. Rocky Romero
After Rocky's solid performance last night, I had high expectations going into this one as I'm a big fan of Low Ki's work. Unfortunately, these guys weren't able to meet the expectations I had. The match just seemed boring. It may have just been me, but something felt like it was missing. They didn't do anything visibly wrong, but this match really felt like nothing more than an average match and I expected much more from these two. Regardless of my expectations not being met, it was a solid contest, although I feel it could have been much better.

Match rating - ***

6) Eddie Kingston vs. Necro Butcher
This was the typical match you would expect from these two. Just a straight up brawl. They went from the ring to the crowd and utilized chairs a few times as well. It was a hardhitting contest, but really wasn't anything that special. Just a slugfest between two crazy tough guys. Decent match.

Match rating - **3/4

7) Tyler Black & Jimmy Jacobs vs. The Young Bucks - PWG World Tag Team Title Match
As a long time fan of both teams, this was a dream match for me. These two teams faced off only one time before at PWG's All Star Weekend 6 where Tyler Black and Jimmy Jacobs were victorious, could the Young Bucks get the win this time AND the PWG Tag Team Titles? That was the question on every one's mind. As expected, this was a really good match. The finish is the only thing that caused me to lower my rating because it was very abrupt. Just like Steen and Strong's match, this was on its way to being an awesome match, but the abrupt finish cut it short. None the less, it was fun while it lasted.

Match rating - ***1/4

8) Chris Hero vs. PAC (Adrian Neville) - PWG World Championship Match
Now THIS is the good shit! After a night of matches that didn't really reflect how awesome PWG is, Hero and PAC came out to steal the show. This was just an amazing match. I've honestly never seen PAC put on a bad match so I knew going in this would be epic. Hero is no slouch himself either. The size difference and style difference actually meshed well together. Hero hit PAC with some vicious strikes, but he responded with some hard kicks of his own. They went back and forth for a solid 15-20 minutes and put together a damn good match. I'll definitely being going back and watching this one again. Awesome match!

Match rating - ****

Overall thoughts: This card had potential to be better than Night 1, but it honestly fell short of my expectations. The show started off good, but never really seemed to pick up. Generico/Perkins was the high point and it went slowly downhill from there until the main event. Overall this was a more solid event because there weren't any weak matches like the two opening bouts on Night 1, but this night didn't have as many outstanding matches as Night 1. Hero/PAC and Generico/Perkins are the only matches that I would consider outstanding here. Steen/Strong and the Tag Title Match were really good, but abrupt finishes ruined them for me. Decent show with an awesome main event.

MVP of All Star Weekend 7: PAC - There were several other considerations for this award including Tyler Black and El Generico, but PAC is the man who truly deserves it. He took part in the two best matches of both nights of All Star Weekend 7 and was arguably the most popular wrestler on the card.
