PWG: 2014 Battle of Los Angeles Night Two Review

PWG 2014 Battle of Los Angeles Night Two Review

1) Candice LeRae vs. Rich Swann - First Round Match
This was tons of fun! The story here was Swann having a counter for nearly every one of Candice's moves since they were both involved in the triple threat tag match last night. Swann had some unique ways of getting out of Candice's signature manuevers such as landing on his feet when she went for a ballplex. This led to Candice having to dig deeper in her repitoire to find a way to pin Swann. She channeled her tag partner Joey Ryan by attempting a mustache ride, but Swann countered out. Despite that, Candice was able to pick up the win with a quick roll up. Action packed opening match.

Match rating - ***

2) Johnny Gargano vs. Chuck Taylor
With the history these two have teaming and facing each other, it was no surprise that they had a great match. It raged throughout the legion hall as Chuck threw Johnny into the crowd, but it ended up costing him as Gargano picked up Taylor and threw him off the stage into a pile of chairs. Chuck would recover however and hit a vicous suplex on the outside that dropped Gargano on the floor. The action in the ring featured alot of counters and was very entertaining. In the end, Gargano would lock Taylor in the Gargano Escape for the submission victory. Great match.

Match rating - ***1/2

3) Ricochet vs. Chris Sabin
This match was pretty different than what I expected. Both men are known for their highflying, but we didn't see much of that here. It was still an entertaining match though. Both guys pulled out all the stops to try to put away the other. Sabin hit an epic leaping piledriver

that was unlike anything I'd ever seen before yet it still wasn't enough to put Ricochet away. In the end it was Ricochet who would come out victorious. Good match.

Match rating - ***1/4

4) ReDragon (Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Biff Busick & Drew Gulak
This match features four of the best technical wrestlers/strikers in the world today so it was bound to be awesome and that's exactly what it was. ReDragon had a bit of an advantage going in because they team way more often than Busick & Gulak, but despite that, Busick & Gulak busted out some double team moves of their own such as powerbombing O'Reilly & Fish into each other. We got some great exchanges on the mat between all four guys early on although it soon broke down into a fierce striking battle. Fantastic tag team match.

Match rating - ****

5) Chris Hero vs. Matt Sydal - First Round Match
Hero and Sydal started things off here with some nice technical exchanges. It was pretty evenly matched in the early going before Hero's strength and striking ability earned him the advantage. This one was held at a pretty methodical pace, but it told a great story of Sydal trying to overcome the bigger man. Every time Sydal would get something going, Hero would shut him down. For instance, Sydal went for a standing moonsault, but Hero somehow caught him and turned into a cravat. Sydal was finally able to get control of the match and pick up the win with a shooting star press. Solid bout that told a great story.

Match rating - ***1/2

6) Adam Cole vs. Zack Sabre Jr - First Round Match
These two locked up early on in the six man tag match on Night One which only made me want to see them face off in singles action even more. With that being said, I was really looking forward to this one and it lived up to expectations. Sabre once again stole the show with his outstanding technical abilities and Cole held up on his end as well. Not much else I can say besides that this was a GREAT match.

Match rating - ****

7) ACH vs. Kenny Omega - First Round Match
WOW! That's all I can really say because this match left me speechless. ACH is probably the most popular guy in PWG right now and putting him in the ring with a guy like Omega who was one of the most popular guys back in 2009 was a recipe for greatness. The two start things out with some great exchanges, but things get taken to a whole new level about 15 minutes in when ACH puts on a Stone Cold Steve Austin jacket from someone in the crowd. ACH proceeded to do Stone Cold's whole moveset whilst Chuck Taylor commentated like Jim Ross. This was absolutely amazing. Everyone in the building was on their feet as ACH stomped a mudhole in Omega, hit the Thesz press, and then nailed him with the stunner. Things got even better when Omega channeled his inner Rocky Johnson and began trading shots with ACH in the center of the ring before nailing him with a Rock Bottom. Phew! That was epic! That's not the only thing that made this match amazing though because the Stone Cold/Rock exchange was just the middle part of the match. These two put together a jaw dropping closing sequence that saw them trade Hadukans, Omega deliver two repeated dragon suplexes to ACH, and so much more. There were a ton of near falls, but Omega was finally able to put ACH away with one of the most vicious Hadukans I've ever seen. AMAZING match. The crowd was on fire from the start, but after the Stone Cold/Rock imitation they came unglued and stayed that way for the rest of the match as ACH & Omega went back to being themselves and tore the house down! This one is a MUST SEE!

Match rating - ****1/4

8) Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian vs. The Young Bucks
After the mindblowing match between ACH and Kenny Omega, I wasn't sure if anyone would be able to follow it, but if anyone could follow it, it was The Young Bucks and Daniels & Kazarian. I think these two teams were more motivated than ever to tear the house down after seeing ACH & Omega do it. The match starts off with a bang as The Bucks superkick the ring announcer then start wrestling around him and they hip toss Kazarian & Daniels onto him. Finally they stop fighting and Kazarian yells "WHY'D YOU SUPERKICK HIM?!" Next thing you know, both teams are kicking the ring announcer! He's finally carried out of the ring and this match gets underway. I'm so glad that Daniels & Kaz found their way out of TNA because they've been killing it ever since and this was no exception. The Bucks were their usual amazing selves here as they debuted the move that is now known as "The Meltzer Driver." This was an awesome match that was somehow able to follow that unbelievable ACH/Omega bout. These two teams continue to prove why they are the best in the world. Their match in ROH was really good, but they somehow managed to surpass it here. This was by far the best match they've had together. Outstanding main event.

Match rating - ****1/4

Overall thoughts: Night One was good, but Night Two blew it out of the water. ReDragon vs Busick & Gulak, ACH vs Omega, and Bucks vs. Daniels & Kazarian are worth the price of this DVD alone. I'd even argue to say that all three are must-see matches, particularly ACH/Omega and Bucks/Bad Influence. PWG has once again blown my mind and I couldn't be more happy that I pre-ordered these DVD's. Awesome show. HIGHLY recommend it.
