ROH: 7th Anniversary Show DVD Review
1) Kenny King & Rhett Titus vs. Roderick Strong & Erick Stevens
This match was on fire from the opening bell and it never slowed down. Some nice exchanges between all four men including somewhat of a dream match up for me as Roderick Strong and Kenny King faced off. I'm big fans of both guys and seeing them lock up was cool. Great tag match to start the show. Alot of action here.
Match rating - 7/10
2) Claudio Castagnoli (Cesaro) vs. Brent Albright
I'm very familiar with Cesaro and I know of Albright from his series of matches with Punk down in OVW so I figured this would be good. These two ended up blowing me away. It may be just me, but I LOVED this match. Hard hitting and alot of great exchanges. It left me wanting to see these two face off again especially after it ended in a time limit draw then got restarted only to end in a DQ. Great match that went around 20 minutes.
Match rating - 7.5/10
3) Adam Pearce vs. Bobby Dempsey
Total squash match here. Lasted maybe 20 seconds. Not even worth talking about.
Match rating - DUD
4) Jerry Lynn vs. Mike Quackenbush
I didn't really know what to expect going into this one. Jerry Lynn is awesome, but I'd never seen Quackenbush compete. Despite that, I had heard alot about him and some great matches he had with Claudio (Cesaro) in ROH so I was interested to see how he would do and I was impressed. Quackenbush hung right in there with Lynn in a technically based match. Good pure wrestling match here.
Match rating - 6.5/10
5) Tyler Black (Seth Rollins), Necro Butcher, & Delirous vs. Brodie Lee (Luke Harper), Austin Aries, & Jimmy Jacobs - Revolution Rules Match
The rules for this one are pretty different. It's an elimination match with No DQ's. The catch is that each fall must be different. Like there can't be two eliminations by pinfall in a row. This was a fun brawl for the most part. Everybody got there stuff in and we saw some nice spots such as Tyler Black cutting a flip over the top rope onto all the participants and Necro Butcher diving off the top turnbuckle to the outside. Delirious was out first followed by Brodie & Necro who brawled out of the arena. Aries and Jacobs began having problems which allowed Black to submit Austin Aries. This left Black and Jacobs in the ring for a nice exchange in which Black came out on top. Solid match, pretty entertaining.
Match rating - 7/10
6) Bryan Danielson & Colt Cabana vs. Jimmy Rave & Bison Smith
Colt Cabana was Danielson's surprise partner here and the crowd exploded when he came out. Awesome moment. The match itself was pretty entertaining. It was your basic solid tag team match with some cool moves such as Danielson springboard into the crowd on Bison Smith. Cabana & Danielson win a fun encounter. Cool seeing them team together, especially in Colt's return match. Nice seeing Jimmy Rave back here too, his return was overshadowed by Colt's epic return.
Match rating - 6/10
7) D-Lo Brown vs. Jay Briscoe
This was right after D-Lo got released from WWE and cut an interesting promo on how his return there was lackluster and that it was a waste of time. He also thanked WWE for his release because his future is in ROH. Nice promo to get the crowd behind him. That didn't last long however as Brown transitioned into a heel during the match by using various antics such as a low blow followed by some aggression. Decent match, but nothing special.
Match rating - 5/10
8) Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. The American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) - No DQ Match for the ROH World Tag Team Titles
After a pretty dull Brown/Briscoe match, we're back to this good stuff with this awesome tag team encounter. These two teams always worked well together and with pretty much anyone they face individually so I knew this would be good. They took good advantage of the No DQ stipulation by bringing in charis & ladders and using them in various. Several crazy, jaw dropping moves such as Generico doing a springboard backflip onto a ladder, Steen slamming Edwards through a steel chair head first with a death valley driver type move, and Generico doing a flying dropkick from one side of the ring to the other sending a ladder into the Wolves' faces. Great tag team match that even got a "This is Awesome!" chant. I expected nothing less from these two outstanding teams.
Match rating - 8.5/10
9) Nigel McGuinness vs. KENTA - ROH World Championship Match
Nigel was going into this match pretty banged up, but he still managed to put on one hell of a match with Kenta. From the get go Kenta targeted Nigel's arm, but McGuiness kept fighting back. They did a great job here early on of working the match around the bicep injury of Nigel. The two then went into a strike battle of sorts, but because of his injury, Nigel threw headbutts to the shoulder of Kenta instead of strikes to the face. The most amazing move of the match took place on the outside as Kenta placed Nigel across the railing and delivered a HUGE flying double footstomp to the back of his head off the top turnbuckle. That was just epic. The whole match was great, but the ending sequence was phenomenal. We saw a tower of london on the ring apron as well as Kenta ducking the jawbreaker lariat and catching Nigel in the Go To Sleep, but McGuiness kicked out! Nigel ends up hitting Kenta with his own move, the Go To Sleep, 1--2-- KENTA KICKED OUT! This match rules. Nigel ends up putting Kenta away with a modified version of one of his submissions. Awesome match.
Match rating - 9/10
Overall thoughts: This was a pretty solid show. There were a few duds and matches that weren't anything special, but there were several great matches on this show as well. I'd say Steen & Generico/Wolves and Nigel/KENTA are the reasons you should buy this DVD with the opening tag bout, Claudio/Albright, and the 6 Man Tag being nice bonuses. So I recommend.
