DGUSA Open The Ultimate Gate 2013 Review
1) Brian Kendrick vs. Rich Swann
This is really an interesting clash. Not only of in-ring styles, but also of unique charismas. I've always been a fan of Kendrick and Swann leading the crowd in "All Night Long" reminded of why I'm such a big fan of his. Once the entertainment ended and the match began, the two managed to piece together a very fun opening match. The premise was simple, Kendrick being the veteran tried to keep Swann grounded while Rich tried to use his speed to gain the upperhand and he ended up doing just that by earning himself a victory. Solid opener.

2) Chuck Taylor vs. Anthony Nese vs. Jigsaw vs. Shane Strickland vs. Fire Ant vs. Arik Cannon - Six Way Freestyle
This one got off to a slow start for a match of this sort involving these men however once it picked up, it fucking picked up. Crazy dives, superkicks, insane exchanges. All the great Indy style stuff that results in a stalemate and also gets the crowd going. Aside from a minor dive botch, this was done flawlessly, so much so that I almost forget the botch even happened considering it was near the beginning of the insanity sequence as I like to call it. Extremely fun match in which Anthony Nese was the star.

3) Derek Ryze vs. Scott Reed
Glorified squash here so there's nothing really to talk about. Caleb Konley came down after and got into a scuffle with partner Reed along with Larry Dallas. Decent little segment to build towards the next night of action although it didn't do anything for me because I don't have the show that followed this one.

4) Jon Davis vs. Trent Baretta
Nice showing for Trent in his DGUSA debut. This was cool to see considering how far he's come on the Indies. I remember his debut weekend in PWG being awkward, but this actually went better than that in my opinion. He got some dives and flashy moves in although the majority of the match was Davis dominated and rightfully so considering his size & character. It ends in a referee stoppage.

5) Super Smash Bros vs. Eita & Tomahawk T.T
SSB! SSB! SSB! The DGUSA fans loved the Super Smash Bros just as much as I did here. They got a huge pop and once the bout got going, you can see why. I'm pretty sure this was their last weekend in DGUSA considering they've been unable to wrestle in the US for quite some time now which is a bummer. This was also Tomahawk's debut and he certainly made an impression. Very good tag match here with alot of action and nearfalls near the end. First real standout match of the show.

6) Ricochet vs. Akira Tozawa (w/ Christina Von Eerie)
Here we have the main reason I bought this DVD. This is a match that I've been wanting to see for quite some time and when I found out it happened, I put this event high on my wishlist. I wont try to go into details about this one, I'll just say that it lived up to all the expectations I had for it. Just the awesome, high quality bout that you would expect from these two. The spot of the match was a brutal german suplex on the ring apron that Ricochet somehow managed to kick out of. It's gonna be hard for the rest of the card to follow this one.

7) Sami Callihan vs. Uhaa Nation
This was exactly what you would expect from a match involving these two, an absolute slugfest. It was right after intermission so I didn't expect them to go all out however they did put together a very good match that was hard hitting and action packed from bell to bell.
Match rating - ***1/2
8) AR Fox & CIMA vs. The Young Bucks
If you've ever seen a Young Bucks match, you know the deal, this was awesome. They always put on entertaining matches that feature exchanges that leave me speechless and this was no exception. My favorite moment had to be Matt going for a superkick only for Fox to fall backwards, spring himself up, and go for one on Matt only for him to do the same thing. Crazy stuff that brought the crowd to it's feet. Just a great tag team match here with a shocking ending that I wasn't expecting.
Match rating - ****
9) Johnny Gargano vs. Shingo - Open The Freedom Gate Title Match
These two had alot to follow and damn if they didn't find a way to do it because this was an amazing match. From the start to the battle outside the ring that saw Gargano eat a big powerslam on the cement floor to the epic exchange that spanned the final 10 or so minutes that saw unbelievable action and dramatic nearfalls, this was a phenomenal main event that saw Gargano stoop to level that no one expected him to go to.
Match rating - ****1/2
