PWG: Roger Dorn Night Review

1) Bino Gambino vs. Top Gun Talwar
I surprisingly enjoyed the efforts these two put forward at the 2007 DDT4 tournament so I went into this with an open mind as well. It wasn't filled with as much comedy as you might expect although they did do some funny stuff. For the most part this was just a solid opening match with some decent action. Not much to talk about here, but nothing to complain about either.

Match rating - **1/4

2) TJ Perkins vs. Tony Kozina
This match really caught me off guard. TJP's recent matches haven't been anything special and I had never seen Kozina so I kinda slept on this match. Once it got going however, they garnered my full attention. There was alot of chain mat wrestling to start off which was clearly TJP's strong suit although Kozina held his own and began targeting the leg of Perkins. TJP would fire back and begin targeting the head of Kozina by nailing him with a vicious DDT on the ring apron. Kozina was literally standing up right on his head for a moment. The crazy action like this continued as we saw Kozina risk it all by piling chairs on top of Perkins outside of the ring and dive over the top rope onto him. It ended up doing more damage to Kozina than it did to Perkins and as a result, it cost him the match. Good bout here.

Match rating - ***1/4

3) Human Tornado (w/ Candice LeRae) vs. Ronin

At this point in time, it had been a few shows since we saw Tornado & Candice have problems onscreen however they began once again here. The whole match was based around that story which kept it entertaining even if the match itself wasn't all that. The best part of this bout came near the end when Tornado motioned for Candice to bring a chair in the ring and she did just that. As she got in the ring with the ref's back turned, she lifts up the chair AND NAILS HUMAN TORNADO OVER THE HEAD WITH IT! Ronin picks up the victory as the crowd explodes due to Candice's actions. Great moment!

Match rating - **1/2

After the match, Tornado calls Candice into the ring, cusses her, and hits his finisher on her. The violence continues. Little did the fans in attendance know what all this would lead to as a few months down the line, Chris Hero would enter the fray and one of the best feuds in PWG history would take place.

4) PAC & Roderick Strong vs. Rocky Romero & Ricky Reyes - PWG World Tag Team Title Match
The winning team of DDT4 vs the otherwise MVP's of DDT4 face off here. The Pitbulls really impressed me in the tournament so I was pumped to see them go at it with PAC & Roddy here. The match starts off with PAC taking it to Ricky Reyes with his high flying manuevers and speed while Roddy & Rocky would soon get tagged in and they picked up right where they left off at All Star Weekend V. Once PAC got back into the match, the Pitbulls began working him over viciously and taking out his legs. This really limited PAC's offense which was a smart strategy for the Havana Pitbulls to implore. Roddy eventually gets the hot tag and things break down. PAC managed to get some strength back in his leg which allowed him to help out Roddy and lead them to victory. Very good match.

Match rating - ***1/2

5) Tyler Black vs. Joey Ryan
This was the first of two newcomer vs veteran match ups on the card. Tyler Black made his PWG debut in 2006 however this is his first singles encounter. The two started off with some light humor as Joey ran the ropes so many times that he got out of breath which led to him bringing out his inhaler. Black took Joey's inhaler and stuck it in his pants and made Joey chase him around the building to get it back. After this, the two got down to business and Joey's veteran insticts kicked in which allowed him to get the advantage. Black would fight back though and hit Joey with alot of high impact offense including a sick face buster that ended up leading him to victory over the former PWG World Champion thanks to a distraction from Scorpio Sky.

Match rating - **3/4

6) The Young Bucks vs. Chris Bosh & Scott Lost
When I started this show, I had no clue that it was actually The Young Bucks' debut in PWG so when I found that out, it made this event even more valuable considering what the Bucks have become. This match was pretty much just an exhibition for them as they got to hit all their signature stuff early on only for Arrogance to come back and eventually get the win. It's interesting to see how different The Bucks' offense has changed over the years. As of this writing, this match is nearly 8 years old and it was really cool to look back on the Bucks' debut as it would end up being the start of something spectacular.

Match rating - ***

7) El Generico (c) vs. Bryan Danielson vs. Kevin Steen vs. Davey Richards - PWG World Title Match
Can you believe that all of these guys are currently in WWE or TNA right now? Man, PWG has really bred some stars over the years and this match is the perfect example. Much like The Bucks match, it wasn't anything amazing, but it was just really cool to see considering where all these guys are now. That's not to write off this match as a dud though because it's a good four-way match in which all four men got a chance to showcase what they could. There were several near falls and some good action near the end. Nice main event even though it wasn't the MOTY candidate that it could have been.

Match rating - ***1/2

The DVD closes with Kevin Steen cutting a promo outside and he ends up cussing out/yelling at a plane that keeps flying over the building. Hilarious stuff.

Overall thoughts: I'd say this is a pretty historical show. The upper middle portion of this card was almost like a youth movement as you saw two founding fathers of PWG & a veteran of the company (Joey Ryan, Scott Lost, & Chris Bosh) go down to some new kids in town in the form of Tyler Black (now known as Seth Rollins) and The Young Bucks. There's been alot of PWG gold held between Ryan, Lost & Bosh and for The Bucks & Black to pick up wins over them here was huge for them at the time. The significance of this is most seen with The Bucks as they would go on to dominate PWG for the next 7 years. Beyond that, the main event reeks of nostalgia as well. If it happened today, it would be Sami Zayn vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Kevin Owens vs Davey Richards. Just imagine that! So in conclusion, there weren't any MOTY contenders on this show and it's nothing worth going out of your way to see, but if you're a fan of any of the guys discussed in this paragraph, I think this would be a worthy addition to your collection considering how far many of the men on this show have come.

  1. Great review! Also a historically significant show for being the last time Photogenic Chris Bosh wrestled in PWG until his retirement match a year later at "Life During Wartime".

For as amazing as PWG has been from '09 on, I still hold this era in high regard because of Bosh, he was such a funny and charismatic dude, a very underrated talent in the grand scheme of things. Also the first BOLA winner, should've been PWG champ at least once. I'll always hold out hope for a Bosh return... just one more time. A full circle moment would be if Arrogance came out of retirement and challenged the Bucks... oh hell, I'm just daydreaming at this point and babbling on for a post nobody will ever read... anyway, great job on all the PWG reviews on the site, I love reading them. Carry on! :) "Bosh! Bosh! Bosh! Bosh!..."
