PWG: Album of The Year Review

PWG: Album of the Year Review

The show opens with Dino Winwood in the ring. He announces that Excalibur is the new commissioner of Food & Beverage. Excalibur comes out and gets into it with Dino about a number of things. The first ever DDT4 tournament is announced and Excalibur strips El Generico & Quicksilver of the tag team titles which means the titles will be up for grabs in the tournament. This is a pretty historic opening segment if you think about it. Frankie Kazarian ends up coming to the ring and calls out Disco Machine. Kazarian challenges Disco to a match for his share of PWG. Disco accepts and the first match of the evening is under way!

1) Frankie Kazarian vs. Disco Machine - Winner Gets 1/6 Ownership of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla

What a way to open the show with such a high stakes match. Kazarian seems to be getting fed up with PWG at this point. Considering he's the first ever PWG Champion and three years later he's in the opening match, I'd probably be frustrated too. None the less, things get going and Kazarian goes at it with Disco Machine in a very fun opening match. Frankie hit alot of cool moves here such as a slingshot cutter however in the end, Disco wins with a roll up after more shenanigans from Dino Winwood and Rick Knox unintentionally cost Kazarian the match. Solid opening match.

Match rating - **1/2

After the match, Kazarian kicks Dino in the crotch and threatens Excalibur before leaving.

2) Kevin Steen & Franky The Mobster vs. Chris Bosh & Scott Lost
This match starts off with a great verbal exchange between Bosh and the debuting Franky The Mobster. Lost & Steen played their roles in the opening promo as well and got this bout off to a very entertaining start. The intensity carried over into the match as we got a good tag team match here with some solid action. It's nothing that will blow you away but it kept the show going at a good pace and kept me entertained. Fun match.

Match rating - **3/4

3) TJ Perkins vs. Ronin
There's not really much talk about here. This match wasn't bad per say however it just felt like it was there and nothing more. Ronin hit some pretty vicious chops and TJP hit some of his usual extremely fluent manuevers. Other than that, it's a pretty basic match. It didn't necessarily take the show down a notch though, it kept it at about the same pace which isn't a bad thing. I just hope the next match takes things up a notch.

Match rating - **

4) Phoenix Star vs. Nemesis
When looking at the card, I felt like this could be the sleeper match of the night. These two know each other very well and their style is extremely fun to watch. Unfortunately, it was nothing more than a solid encounter. They had some nice exchanges but that's about it. This one really didn't live up to expectations. Decent match.

Match rating - **1/4

5) Joey Ryan vs. Top Gun Talwar - Tuxedo Match
A tuxedo match is the LAST thing this show needed at this point. Joey and Top Gun had a pretty hilarious match a few weeks ago at Holy Diver Down so I knew they would have a good comedic bout here but this was a terrible place on the card for it to be. For that reason, I wasn't able to get into this until about the half way point when Top Gun channeled his inner Trish Stratus by hitting Joey with the stratusfaction. I was just totally uninterested when this match began so you may enjoy it more than I did because it was pretty funny.

Match rating - *3/4

Joey Ryan cuts a solid promo afterwards on how he began 2007 as the PWG Champion and no one could beat him. He wants to face someone now that he can't beat. Ronin comes out and a brawl begins. Scorpio Sky hits the ring to make the save though and he & Joey come out on top.

6) Karl Anderson vs. Colt Cabana
With the names involved, I hoped they could turn this show around. Although they weren't able to do that, they did put together an enjoyable encounter that featured a good bit of comedy. For instance, Cabana would go for a punch and Machine Gun would try to stop himself from squealing. This was a decent match however I was expecting more considering it was so high up on the card and there hadn't been any standout matches thus far on the show.

Match rating - **1/4

7) Claudio Castagnoli vs. Rocky Romero
FINALLY, we get to some good stuff. This was one of the matches I was most looking forward to so thankfully it delivered. Both of these guys are well versed in the technical/submission aspect of wrestling so we got a great pure wrestling match here although Rocky did throw Claudio into some chairs at one point. These two threw some innovative spots into the match such as Claudio going for an uppercut and Rocky catching him in a massive german suplex. Best match of the night at this point in the show.

Match rating - ***1/4

8) El Generico vs. Davey Richards - PWG World Title Match
After winning the 2006 Battle of Los Angeles, Davey Richards finally gets his World Championship Match here against El Generico. Generico out quicked Davey several times early on which visibly frustrated the then heel Davey Richards. Davey would soon get the advantage though and base the whole match around keeping Generico grounded. Some highlights here include Generico hitting a crazily innovative moonsault, an array of kicks from both men that resulted in a stalemate, and the move that ended the match - a brainbuster on the ring apron. Pretty awesome main event, I really enjoyed it.

Match rating - ***3/4

Overall thoughts: This show started off good, but after the two opening matches, things really slowed down and didn't pick back up until the final two matches. The only match worth going out of your way to see here is Generico/Richards. With that being said, I guess this could be considered a one match show although Claudio/Romero is solid as well. None the less, I wouldn't recommend paying the full $15 for this show unless you REALLY want to see Generico/Richards. Otherwise, I'd try to find it for a little cheaper because there is something worth seeing here, it's just not a good overall show.
