PWG: All Star Weekend V Night Two Review

PWG All Star Weekend V Night Two Review
1) Kevin Steen vs. Joey Ryan - No DQ Match
Steen attacked Joey from behind to begin the bout and things quickly spilled to the outside from there. These two fought all around the building and used various weapons such as guardrails, chairs & chains to punish each other. Some notable spots include Joey back dropping Steen onto the railing, Steen propping up a guardrailing & running up it, and the move that ended the match, a package piledriver onto two upright chairs. Really good match that saw some interference from Ronin & Karl Anderson although it didn't effect the finish. Great way to start the show.

Match rating - ***1/2

2) TJ Perkins, Rocky Romero, & Ronin vs. Karl Anderson, NOSAWA, & Lil Cholo
This one had a lot of underlying stories involved. Whether it be the Anderson/Ronin issue that developed earlier in the evening or the past between TJP & Ronin, there were many storylines wrapped into one here. None the less, this was your basic six man tag which isn't a bad thing. The action was solid throughout and very enjoyable.

Match rating - **3/4

3) Davey Richards vs. Chris Hero

On paper this may seem like a dream match however it didn't come out that way. I'm a fan of both these guys although not enough to go out of my way to see them compete. None the less, this really didn't live up to expectations. Okay match, but quite possibly the worst of the night.

Match rating - **1/2

4) Colt Cabana & Top Gun Talwar vs. Disco Machine & Kikutaro - Special Guest Ref: TARO
This was Colt Cabana's final match in PWG before going to WWE in 2007. The ring was covered in streamers when he was introduced as a sign of thanks and respect. I loved this match because it was the perfect way for Colt to go it doing what he does best - comedy. The five funniest guys in PWG were encompasssed in one ring and it was awesome. I say five because TARO, who is known for his drunk hilarious commentary in the early days of PWG, was the guest referee. The humor here was off the charts and lasted from beginning to end. Kikutaro got on the mic and it was hard to understand what exactly he said although it basically sounded like he told Colt he'd see him on TV and if it doesn't work out, he should come back to PWG because they'll all be waiting on him. Pretty awesome moment considering that Colt's first booking came one night after he was released by WWE in 2009 and it was at PWG's Express Written Consent event. Looks like Colt listened to Kikutaro's advice.

Match rating - **

5) Claudio Castagnoli vs. Alex Shelley
I recently watched a match between these two from IWA Mid-South in 2004 and it was great as you'd probably expect. So with that being said, I was really looking forward to how this would play out. Their IWA encounter was mainly kept on the mat with Shelley working on Claudio's leg whereas this match featured a whole lot more than that. I was curious if they'd have a match similar to their previous encounter, but they switched things up here which was nice to see. There was a good bit of highflying here from Shelley which ending up costing him as he jumped off the turnbuckle, missed Claudio, and landed hard on the cement floor. This was a very competitive match with alot of back and forth action. Great bout.

Match rating - ***3/4

6) Kaz Hayashi vs. PAC
I've come to expect nothing less than a fanastic match from PAC in PWG and that was once again the case here. Things started out a bit slow with Hayashi trying to ground PAC by targeting his shoulder in various ways such as slamming him into the ring post and hitting a shoulder breaker on his knee. PAC held his own on the ground game though which led to both men just going tit for tat with one another trading big moves. That made for alot of close falls and insane action. This wasn't on the level of PAC's match with Generico on the previous night, but it was still a damn good encounter.

Match rating - ***3/4

7) Roderick Strong & Jack Evans vs. Chris Bosh & Scott Lost
With the first ever DDT4 tag team tournament coming up just a month after this, this bout was a nice preview for it. Despite a few early botches from Evans, this turned into a pretty good tag match as all four men laid it all out their for the fans. So much so that it resulted in a stalemate with all four men down which led to the return of Super Dragon! Good match while it lasted.

Match rating - ***1/4

As mentioned above, Super Dragon returned along with Davey Richards. They laid out all four guys in the previous match and declared their intentions to win the DDT4 Tag Team tournament. It was an extremely hype moment however the excitement had only begun because as Dragon was exiting the ring, a fan across the building started chanting "You fat fuck!" at him which led to a confrontation between the two. Dragon ran over and cornered the guy up against the railing and went nose to nose with him before backing off. The ring announcer and refs tried to back Dragon off as he threw a chair at the fan and walked away. Wow! That was crazy! Gotta love Super Dragon!

8) El Generico vs. Human Tornado - PWG World Title Match
I think Generico & Tornado have finally figured out what kind of match they are best suited to have. And that is to just go the spotty route. It may sound odd, but if you watch their previous encounters, the best one is from a few months prior to this at Holy Diver Down. The two just go at it right from the start and deliver an action packed match. It may not tell much of a story however it's entertaining and is better than a long drawn out match between the two. It seemed like they tried to mix the two here by slowing it down at times although for the most part it was a high impact match. Solid world title bout.

Match rating - ***1/4

9) Samoa Joe vs. Low Ki
These two are known for their series of matches in Ring of Honor in 2002 and as of this writing, I haven't seen those so I'm sure I'm in for a treat here. This was Joe and Ki's first meeting in PWG which you may have already figured out because it was Ki's debut weekend. None the less, this was exactly what you would expect from these two. A stiff, strike filled battle in which both men gave everything they had. As the saying goes - they left it all in the ring. Awesome match to close out a great show from PWG. A definite MOTY candidate for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla in 2007.

Match rating - ****1/4
