PWG: DDT4 2009 DVD Review

PWG DDT4 2009 Review

The show opens with Paul London an
d Excalibur in the ring. London says he will be unable to compete tonight, but he wanted to be there anyway. London tells his partner Bryan Danielson to come out. Bryan comes to the ring and immediately gets "Happy Birthday" chants from the audience as it's his birthday. Paul London gives Bryan bunch of gifts including a special made cape, a Four Horsemen DVD, and Four Horsemen action figures. This is great haha. London keeps going through his suitcase pulling out stuff to give Bryan then he asks Chris Hero to come out. Hero decides to pull out of the DDT4 tournament to allow Roderick Strong to team with Bryan since Paul London can't compete. Roderick Strong comes out to the ring and London gives him a bee mask. London decides to stay at ringside and manage Strong & Bryan in their first round match. While Bryan & Strong are getting ready, Joey Ryan and Scott Lost hit the ring and attack them from behind!

1) Bryan Danielson & Roderick Strong (w/ Paul London) vs. Joey Ryan & Scott Lost
After ambushing the Hybrid Dolphins, Joey and Scott have the upperhand. This match was balls to the wall the whole time. The crowd was so hot after that opening segment and that made this match even more great. It was an action packed

10-15 minute opening tag match and I loved it! Some people may accuse me of over rating this one, but it's just so fun to watch! Great opening match!

Match rating - ***1/2

2) Human Tornado & Scorpio Sky vs. Chuck Taylor & Kenny Omega
What a match this was! I thought the opening match was action packed, but this one was even more awesome. It went a bit longer so they were able to do alot more. There wasn't much comedy from Taylor & Omega like normal, but we did a grenade spot followed by a double elbow drop from them. The ending sequence is amazing and perfectly describes the order of this match. Sky cuts a backflip over the top rope onto Omega! Sky goes onto the apron, but Omega grabs him - GERMAN SUPLEX THROUGH THE CHAIRS! Tornado lifts up Taylor in the ring, but Omega interrupts and lifts Tornado up on his shoulders, throws him in the air, GERMAN SUPLEX! Chuck Taylor grabs Tornado for A PILDERIVER! Omega & Taylor get the win in an amazing match!

Match rating - ***3/4

3) The Young Bucks vs. The Cutler Bros
These two teams tore down the house at last month's show, One Hundred, so I expected them to do the same here and they did just that. It started off very fast paced, but The Cutlers slowed it down a bit and tried to ground the Bucks. That didn't last long however as the match got crazy once again for the final stretch. This was an outstanding match that topped their previous match at One Hundred. Great stuff!

Match rating - ***1/2

4) Malachi Jackson vs. Pheonix Star
Despite Zokre being unable to compete thus the Los Luchas not being involved in the tournament, atleast we get to see Pheonix Star compete! This is also the debut of The Young Bucks' younger brother Malachi Jackson or "The Youngest Buck" as he's called. This was a great debut for him and a very fun lucha libre style fast paced match.

Match rating - ***1/4

5) Kenny Omega & Chuck Taylor vs. The Young Bucks - Semi Final Round Match
As mentioned earlier, Omega & Taylor both had a serious demeaner on this particular night. It was first seen in their first round match and was even more noticeable here. These guys were in this tournament to win it! Their change in character definitely paid off for the fans because we got to see an amazing match here with The Young Bucks. It was even better than both teams incredible quarter final round matches earlier in the evening. The near falls had me jumping out of my seat much like everyone who was attending live. Awesome match!

Match rating - ****1/4

6) Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley vs. Bryan Danielson & Roderick Strong
The match started off with some technical exchanges between a member of each team which was very entertaining. Danielson has had classics in ROH with both Sabin and Shelley so it was no surprise that this match was so good. Despite the match starting off very technical, it really picked up in the long run. This was another really good match in which Danielson & Strong came out victorious.

Match rating - ***1/2

7) Chris Hero vs. Joey Ryan - PWG World Title Match
I didn't have high expectations for this one and I'm glad I didn't. Hero's title reign has been lackluster so far aside from a few matches. He's a phenomenal wrestler, but it's felt like something was missing from nearly every title defense he's had. Either the match ends aprubtly or something - there's always a factor that has hindered my enjoyment of the majority of his recent title defenses. One thing I will say about this is that it had a great story going into it which was that Hero had held the title for 10 months while Joey holds the record for the longest title reign which is 13 months. The story was great, but the match was nothing more than average. I was actually pretty bored by it so I can't really say much else about it except that the storyline was good.

Match rating - **3/4

8) The Young Bucks vs. Bryan Danielson & Roderick Strong
I had already seen this particular match once on the PWG Sells Out 3 compilation DVD and I reviewed it then as well. I must say that I enjoyed it much more this time than I did the first time watching it. I'm not sure why, but I did. Danielson and Strong gave The Bucks a beating from the start. They battled through the crowd, throwing the Bucks through chairs and delivering backbreakers and suplexes on the apron before heading back to the ring. In the ring, Danielson & Strong continued to dominate with frequent tags until The Bucks finally made a tag and then the action broke down. So many dueling moves from this point on such as The Bucks hitting a facebuster on Roderick from the top rope. Bryan had some impressive offense here as well though as he delivered nearly 30 stiff elbows to the side of Nick Jackson's head. Great match.

Match rating - ***3/4

Overall thoughts: This was a phenomenal show. A huge step up from PWG's show the previous month, One Hundred. Every match on here was great, excluding the Hero/Ryan match. Every single tournament match delivered and made for an awesome show. I definitely recommend checking this show out. My favorite PWG DDT4 tournament of all time.
