PWG: One Hundred Review

PWG One Hundred DVD Review

PWG celebrates it's 100th show here with a star studded show line up featuring Bryan Danielson, Tyler Black, The Young Bucks, Davey Richards, and Roderick Strong among others. The main event pits Chris Hero defending his PWG World Championship against Colt Cabana!

1) The Young Bucks vs. The Cutler Bros - PWG World Tag Team Title Match
After main eventing PWG's Ninety Nine event the night before and successfully defending their Tag Team Titles against Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley, The Young Bucks start off this event with a challenge to long time rivals, The Cutler Brothers. The Cutlers accept of course and the match begans in fast paced fashion. The Bucks picked up right where they left off last night - stealing the show. Simply, this was an awesome match! Almost as good as the match from the previous night between The Bucks and MCMG. I don't think The Young Bucks can put on a bad match and that once again showcased here. But the match wasn't all them, The Cutlers delivered as well and the result was a fantastic opener.

Match rating - ***1/2

2) Scott Lost vs. Roderick Strong
This match started off with a bang as Lost dropkicked Strong as soon as he was introduced. The match kept that pace as the action spilled to the outside. A good bit of the match took place outside of the ring including
Scott Lost hitting an ace crusher on Strong on the floor. In the ring, it was very competitive and fast paced for the most part. This was a great action packed match.

Match rating - ***1/4

3) Bryan Danielson vs. Kenny Omega
Never once did I expect to see a arm wrestling competition or a thumb war in a match involving Bryan Danielson, but it happened here. This match featured alot of comedy so some people may not like it, but I found it very entertaining. Beyond the comedy, there was a nice stretch of wrestling during the final ten minutes of the bout. Because of the dynamics of this match with a large amount of comedy involved, I'm not going to rate this match. Don't take that as a bad thing though because it's worth a watch.

4) Paul London vs. Joey Ryan
Just like the Lost/Strong match, this bout started off with a bang with both guys brawling to the outside. The Dynasty (Lost & Ryan) are more aggressive than usual tonight. While on the outside we saw some nice moves from both London and Joey including a dropkick into the stage. This was a very physical match as could be seen from London's back afterwards. He had several cuts on it from moves such as a huge spear off the apron into chairs from Joey. Really good match.

Match rating - ***1/4

5) Austin Aries, Human Tornado, & Chuck Taylor vs. B-Boy, Scorpio Sky, & Candice LeRae
This was your basic PWG six man tag which is always good. The action was nonstop and there were several great spots. They also threw some funny moments in such as Chuck Taylor holding Candice LeRae so Austin Aries could kiss her only for Candice to move and Chuck & Austin.. well you get it. Aries punches Chuck, but the two get back on the same page and end up winning the match. Very fun six man tag.

Match rating - ***1/4

6) Tyler Black vs. Davey Richards
These two were involved in the best respective singles match on the night before this at Ninety-Nine where Black faced Generico and Richards faced Omega. So when these two were put into a match together I knew we were in for a treat. Many different styles were showcased here from technicality to submissions to highflying. This was a great match. The abrupt roll up finish was the only thing that took away from it. If this had gone a bit longer, it likely would have ventured into four star territory.

Match rating - ***3/4

7) El Generico vs. Sonjay Dutt
I expected this one to be fun and that's what this was, but nothing more. With the high flying/technical hybrid styles of both men, I thought this had potential to be a classic but it turned out to be nothing more than just a fun little bout. Which isn't a bad thing, I was just expecting more from a match in the co-main event slot on the show.

Match rating - ***

8) Chris Hero vs. Colt Cabana
This match was a ton of fun. From Cabana toying with the audience to the early technical exchange between the two longtime competitors. The match was pretty technical to start with, but it turned quite vicious after Cabana ran Hero off the apron into the ring post. From that point on it turned into a straight up battle for the World Title. Hero hit a roaring elbow for a rather abrupt win. Unfortunately just like most matches in this show, this was fun but nothing more. And had the potential to be much better.

Match rating - ***

After the match Joey Ryan got on the mic and told Chris Hero that he was a good champion, but that he isn't as good of a champion as Joey was. Joey goes onto say that it wasn't long ago that The Dynasty ran things around PWG and it's about time they took the company back. SCOTT LOST ATTACKS HERO FROM BEHIND! This explains the viciousness of Joey & Scott throughout the night. Joey runs down through the crowd to join in on the beatdown. But here comes PAUL LONDON AND BRYAN DANIELSON! They ran off The Dynasty and Hero is pissed now. Hero challenges Joey to a match right now, but Joey declines because it's a 3 on 2 situation right now. Joey then tells Hero that he has some surprises coming for him and that he is going to get his World Title back! Wow! I loved that closing segment. Scott Lost has been a favorite of mine for a while and seeing him get to shine as a heel here alongside Joey was great. Although I'm a fan of Hero, I haven't been impressed with his PWG title reign and this is exactly what needed to happen to spice things up!

Overall thoughts: Decent show. The opener was the only real stand out match. Definitely the match of the night. Everything else was solid and/or fun, but nothing more. No other real stand out matches which hurt the show as a whole. I was bored with Hero's reign to begin with and with yet another lackluster defense here, something was needed to regain my interest and the incident with Joey Ryan & Scott Lost did just that. Looking forward to checking out and reviewing the next show, DDT4 2009! As for this show, there's really nothing worth going out of your way to see. So unless you're a completionist or find this at a lower price than the regular $14.99, I'd pass on this one. It's not bad, but it's not PWG's best.
