PWG: Ninety Nine DVD Review

PWG Ninety Nine DVD Review

Here we have one of the most star studded PWG shows I think I've seen. There are alot of former/current WWE & TNA stars on this show including Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Davey Richards, Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley and Austin Aries. Just goes to show that Indy Wrestling matters.

1) Los Luchas & Scorpio Sky vs. The Cutler Brothers & Scott Lost
The Cutlers and Los Luchas had an awesome match at Gentle Art of Making Enemies a few months back so I expected this to be really good. That combined with Scorpio Sky and Scott Lost's outstanding abilities made for a great opening match. Your basic six man tag with a lot of action!

Match rating - 7/10

2) Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) vs. Chuck Taylor

I had mixed feelings going into this match about whether it would be good or not. Taylor is hilarious, but I thought his comedy might not mix well with someone like Bryan who's drawing factor is his wrestling skills. Despite that, the two meshed very well here. Perfect mix of entertainment and wrestling. This match was really good and much better than I expected. Bryan pulled a great performance out of Chuck Taylor.

Match rating - 7/10

3) B-Boy vs. Joey Ryan

With a show as star studded as this one, I'm sure local/homegrown talents like Joey and B-Boy felt pressured to put on a good match. Needless to say, they did just that. This was a damn good match that was better than I expected. B-Boy's match last month against TJ Perkins wasn't that good, but he worked so well with Joey Ryan here. The most jaw dropping moment here was when B-Boy delivered a piledriver to Joey Ryan on the ring apron. That was insane! At first it looked like Joey was really hurt so some refs came out to take him to the back. Only for Joey to run back into the ring and roll up B-Boy for the win! Wow! That was a brilliant job by Joey Ryan, he even had me fooled. Great match!

Match rating - 7.5/10

4) Davey Richards vs. Kenny Omega
The story going into this match was that the last time these two were in the ring together (at BOLA 2008), Davey threw Kenny through the ring ropes. So in the early moments of the bout, Omega was sketched out about using the ropes, but that fear soon turned into a plan to turn the match in his favor as he refused to get back into the ring until Davey ran the ropes. When Richards ran the ropes, Omega grabbed his legs pulled him to the outside and ran back in the ring and hit a HUGE dive over the top rope! From that point on - this match was amazing. The chemistry these two have is just unbelievable. From Davey's huge release german suplex off the top rope that planted Omega on his head to Omega's crazy finisher being showcased for the first time in PWG, this was such an outstanding match. It was just a sign of things to come however as these two would go onto have one of the best matches in PWG history at "As The Worm Turns" in 2010. I can see now why that match was so great because with this bout being their first ever meeting, they still had that same chemistry. Outstanding match.

Match rating - 8.5/10

5) Sonjay Dutt vs. Roderick Strong

This was Dutt's debut in Pro Wrestling Guerilla and what a first opponent he has in PWG veteran Roderick Strong. Dutt and Strong put together a very entertaining match here. Strong was quite physical in this match as he hit numerous vicious backbreakers on Dutt. Despite Roderick's strong showing (no pun intended), the best part of this match was seeing Dutt do some unique moves. Good match.

Match rating - 7/10

6) Tyler Black (Seth Rollins) vs. El Generico (Sami Zayn)

What a match up we have here. For WWE fans, this a dream match as of this writing. Both men are currently signed to WWE and are easily two of the best on the roster. Just the other day I was thinking of how badly I wanted to see them wrestle each other, come to find out they faced off a few years ago on this show so I was very excited for this match. Black and Generico put on an outstanding match with alot of counters and nearfalls. This was the high quality match one would expect from these two men.

Match rating - 8/10

7) Chris Hero (w/ Candice LeRae) vs. Austin Aries - PWG World Title Match

The crowd is solidly behind Aries going into the match as they've seemingly grown tired of Chris Hero. Aries played his sly heel character perfectly here and even got the fans to start booing him despite having been the favorite early one. Hero got irritated by Aries early on when Aries used Hero's own elbow strikes against him and repeatedly outquicked & outsmarted the big man. Then Aries went after Candice LeRae which just infuriated Hero more. The most brutal shot in this match came when Hero went to deliver a roaring elbow to Aries, but he moved and Hero nailed the ring post at full speed. I have no idea how that didn't break his arm. From that point on, Aries targeted the arm of Hero. This was a great match that told a good story with Aries playing his character perfectly.

Match rating - 8/10

8) The Young Bucks vs. Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley (Motor City Machine Guns) - PWG World Tag Team Title Match

For fans of tag team wrestling, this has been a dream match years in the making. As Shelley would note after the match, PWG was one of the first companies to allow Sabin & Shelley to team together and they would go on to be successful as a team in companies such as TNA. Meanwhile the Young Bucks took charge as the best tag team in PWG, so the time finally came to see arguably the two best tag teams in the world at the time square off. Needless to say, this lived up to the expectations that everyone had for it. Just an amazing tag team match that was loaded with fast packed action that both teams are known for. Incredible match between two of the best tag teams of the past decade. Match of the night.

Match rating - 9/10

Overall thoughts: Great show from PWG here. The undercard was very solid and every match on the card as a whole was good. Richards/Omega, Generico/Black, and Bucks/MCMG were the best matches of the night for me. The Hero/Aries match was very good as well. Everything besides those were still solid encounters. So this is a show I'd recommend checking out.
