PWG: DDT4 2014 Review

PWG: DDT4 2014 DVD Review

1) Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent?) vs. RockNES Monsters (Johnny Goodtime & Johnny Yuma) - First Round Match
The crowd was SUPER hot for this one. Especially for the Best Friends. This was an action packed opener that never slowed down. I often forgot how good the Rocknes Monsters are, but they reminded me of it here. Goodtime took a page out of Ricochet's book and dove over the top turnbuckle to the outside, UNBELIEVABLE! No matter how times I see that happen, I'll still mark out each time. Great opener here that saw the Best Friends debut several new antics including Trent sporting a kneepad with Chuck Taylor's face on it aptly called "The Chuckie Knee." They also brought their new secret weapon into the match, a trenchcoat! I normally am not a big fan of comedy in wrestling, but it's impossible to not like Taylor & Trent, this was fantastic. Fun, crazy spot fest.

Match rating - ***1/4

2) PPRaay (Peter Avalon & Ray Rosas) vs. Unbreakble F'N Machines (Michael Elgin & Brian Cage)

I never thought that a match that was this much of a mismatch could be so entertaining, but if anyone can make it entertaining, it's PWG. For those who don't know Elgin & Cage are literally twice the size of Avalon & Rosas so the Machines had an advantage to begin with. PPRay did manage to get in some offense here and show what they could do despite the size difference. There were some jawdropping moments such as Elgin doing some sort of corkscrew backflip off the top rope and Elgin powerbombing Rosas onto

Avalon off the top rope. These guys also executed some innovative combination moves in this match as well. Very entertaining bout.

Match rating - ***1/4

3) Kevin Steen & Adam Cole vs. Candice LeRae & Joey Ryan
The rivalry between Mount Rushmore and The World's Cutest Tag Team continues here in the first round of the 2014 DDT4 tournament. And as always, it was super entertaining. It started off very fast paced with Candice cutting a flip off the apron onto Cole, but soon slowed down as Cole & Steen isolated Joey Ryan. Normally when this happens in a tag match, the bout gets a little dull by Kevin Steen's humor kept this one exciting. From telling Cole "Touch my hand" before making a tag to yelling at the fans "I'M NOT HERE FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT!" It was all hilarious. Then the ending sequence hit and these two teams went all out for the final stretch of this match. Ballplexes, Candice hitting a hurricanrana on Cole off the apron onto Steen, Cole hitting Candice with a Canadian Destroyer, Steen hitting the running cannonball into the corner on Candice, it was awesome. The ending was epic as Steen lifted Joey up for the package piledriver, Cole superkicked the shit out of Joey's head, then Steen hit the piledriver. Crazy match!

Match rating - ***1/2

4) Ricochet & Rich Swann vs. AR Fox & ACH
I knew this was gonna be insane and that's exactly what it was. Ricochet, Rich Swann, AR Fox, and ACH are four of the most awesome highflyers in wrestling today so when you get all four of them in the ring, you get an unbelievable match like this. I can't even begin to list off all the awesome stuff they did, but a few things that stick out were Ricochet delivering a death valley driver on AR Fox off the top turnbuckle to the apron then ACH ran and bounced off the second rope thus flipping super high into the air out of the ring onto Ricochet. That sequence was jaw dropping just like the majority of this match. Phenomenal match!

Match rating - ****1/2

5) Tommaso Ciampa vs. Adam Thornstowe - Non Tournament Match
Ciampa was orginally scheduled to face Strong, but he was unable to be there so Adam Thornstowe was called in to make his PWG debut. And what a task Thornstowe had in his debut as he was welcomed to PWG by going one on one with the Sicilian Psychopath, Tommaso Ciampa. This was a solid match that had several breathtaking moments such as Ciampa suplexing Thornstowe on the floor. Thornstowe had a good performance here despite a botched standing moonsault. He stood toe to toe with Ciampa, but in the end a stiff strike put Thornstowe down for the count.

Match rating - **3/4

6) Kevin Steen & Adam Cole vs. Chuck Taylor & Trent? - Semi Final Round Match
This match was crazy! It raged through the crowd and onto the stage where Chuck Taylor grabbed the commentary set off of Excalibur's head and said "Best Friends are here to win the whole damn thing!" Taylor and Trent then executed an amazing double dive off the stage backflipping onto Steen and Cole in the crowd. The action finally got in the ring where it was just as fast and furious as it was while on the outside of the ring. Candice LeRae ended up being the determining factor in this match as she distracted Cole long enough for Trent to roll Steen up for a quick three count! Super fun match!

Match rating - ***1/2

7) Ricochet & Rich Swann vs. Michael Elgin & Brian Cage
Can the Inner City Machine Guns have a bad match? I don't think so. After putting on a phenomenal match earlier in the night, Ricochet & Rich Swann did the same thing here. Just an awesome match with loads of high flying even from Cage & Elgin! Cage did a moonsault off the second rope and Elgin did a backflip off the top rope, it was insane seeing two huge guys doing that! Awesome match!

Match rating - ***3/4

8) Chris Hero vs. Johnny Gargano vs. Drake Younger vs. Kyle O'Reilly - #1 Contender's Match for the PWG World Title
This is one of the most unique four way matches I've ever seen. In the beginning it looked like there were two separate matches going on in the same ring. Beyond that, they also did several submission moves that included all four men in the match. It was just amazing to watch because of how innovative they were here. The match soon turned into a slug fest however with every man hitting their opponents with all they had. Awesome four way match!

Match rating - ***3/4

9) Ricochet & Rich Swann vs. Chuck Taylor & Trent?
Just like the opening match, this was basically just a super fun spot fest. Tons of action packed into ten minutes. Trent hit an unbelievable half nelson suplex on the apron planting Ricochet on the back of his head. Meanwhile Chuck Taylor nailed Rich Swann with a piledriver for the victory! Great final round match! It didn't last long like a typical main event would, but it's understandable considering they had already wrestled two matches on this night.

Match rating - ***1/2

Overall thoughts: As usual with PWG, there aren't any weak matches on this show. All the tournament matches delivered and the four way was awesome. The match of the night has to go to the Inner City Machine Guns vs. African American Wolves match. It was just amazing. I definitely recommend check this show out. It was outstanding. Also, if you're a fan of Chuck Taylor and/or Trent, this is a must have. They put on three of the most entertaining matches I've ever seen them participate in and won the whole tournament. Overall this was a great show that I think most would enjoy, so I highly recommend it.
