PWG: DDT4 2012 Review

PWG DDT4 2012 DVD Review

1) Fightin' Taylor Boys (Brian Cage & Ryan Taylor) vs. RockNES Monsters (Johnny Yuma & Johnny Goodtime) - First Round Match
The first round matches of DDT4 are normally rather short and very spotty which is exactly what this was. That's not a bad thing though as it was very entertaining. I'm tempted to say Brian Cage stole the show with his unique blend of super human strength and agility. Some of the moves this guy pulls off are insane. From high flying stuff to suplexing Goodtime with Yuma on his shoulders, Cage is a machine. Overall this was a fun opening match.

Match rating - ***1/4

2) The Dynasty (Joey Ryan & Scorpio Sky) vs. Future Shock (Adam Cole & Kyle O'Reilly)
Much like the previous match this was your typical DDT4 first round match. About 10 minutes or so long and packed full of action. Future Shock were so

over with the crowd here. I don't blame the audience though. After Cole & O'Reilly's amazing performance at Steen Wolf in 2011, I instantly became a fan. They're actually of the main reasons I bought this DVD. None the less, this was an entertaining match.

Match rating - ***1/4

3) Sami Callihan & Roderick Strong vs. 2 Husky Black Guys (El Generico & Willie Mack)
I originally thought this may be one of the weaker matches on the card because Callihan and Strong had never teamed together before, but it turned out to be one of the best. They were given a bit more time than the previous two opening matches so this wasn't a complete spotfest. It was held a methodical pace until the ending sequence where they turned it up a notch and produced an amazing exchange. Big move after big move. Well paced contest and surprisingly the best match of the night up to this point.

Match rating - ***1/2

4) The Young Bucks vs. Super Smash Bros
Two of my favorite tag teams facing off, man I was stoked for this one. This was an extremely entertaining match. It wasn't as generic as the two opening matches, but it wasn't as good as the previous match between Generico & Mack and Strong & Callihan either. Nice change of pace once again here. The final few minutes of this match were awesome, but the abrupt finish with a roll up caused me to drop my rating a bit. Although the finish is understandable because with this being a first round match, you don't wanna wear the teams out. So, this was good for what it was, but it's not close to the classic these teams would have a few months down the line at PWG's "Death to All But Metal" show.

Match rating - ***1/2

5) 2 Husky Black Guys (El Generico & Willie Mack) vs. RockNES Monsters - Semi Final Round Match
The odd team of Generico & Willie face off against the seasoned team of Goodtime & Yuma here. This was a solid tag match, but it was probably the weakest on the show. Aside from the dueling dives by Generico & Willie and the jaw dropping closing sequence that saw Goodtime dive over the top rope onto Generico while Willie delivered a piledriver to Yuma, this wasn't anything special. Solid bout none the less.

Match rating - ***

6) Future Shock (Adam Cole & Kyle O'Reilly) vs. Super Smash Bros - Semi Final Round Match
These guys tore the house down! Both teams are favorites mine so I was obviously excited for it and they delivered a match that lived up to my expectations. Just an awesome match with tons of combination moves and jaw dropping moments. It wasn't a complete spotfest however as we got some good wrestling to start off and it was held at a steady pace until the final ten minutes when everything broke down. Double guillotines, tons of superkicks, and so much more. Phenomenal match.

Match rating - ****

7) Kevin Steen vs. Sami Callihan - PWG World Title Match
Going into this match, I had one though - "This is gonna be fucking awesome!" I was right. This was made personal when Steen & Callihan had a war of words on Twitter then earlier in the night on commentary Steen insulted Callihan by calling him the flavor of the month. Steen made this even more personal by sporting a vest similar to Callihan's to the ring to mock him, he even put it back on during the match and wore it while he beat him down. This was so stiff and intense. This was Callihan's debut and it told a great story of the veteran (Steen) trying to teach the newcomer a lesson. Steen gave Callihan a beating, but he kept coming. Even giving Steen the finger and saying "Fuck you!" after taking stiff shops from Steen. This was mainly dominated by Steen as he hit three powerbombs on the apron and finished Callihan off with a package piledriver, but it was very entertaining and told a great story. So this was outstanding in my opinion.

Match rating - ***1/4

8) Super Smash Bros vs. El Generico & Willie
Mack - Finals of the DDT4 Tournament
I didn't really know what to expect headed into this match. The Smash Bros tore the house down in their previous match so I'm sure they're tired and Generico/Willie as a team had been kind of underwhelming up to this point, but this turned out to be fantastic. The Super Smash Bros put on the fantastic performance they are known for and Generico & Willie must have been saving their best for last because they looked awesome here! Several jaw dropping moments such as Stupefied delivering an exploder suplex on Generico off the apron onto Willie Mack on the floor. This was an outstanding match and great way to close the tournament.

Match rating - ***3/4

After the match, The Young Bucks run down to the ring and attach both Generico & Willie Mack and the Super Smash Bros. But Kevin Steen runs in with a chair to make the save. The Bucks say this is their tournament and their night. Then Matt says he and his brother want a rematch for the titles against "Kevin Steen and Super Faggot" (Super Dragon). Steen completely owns him by saying "How can I give you a rematch for the tag team titles if I'm teaming with your brother?" The Bucks eventually leave and Steen puts over both Super Smash Bros and Willie Mack. Then he gets to El Generico and it looks as if he's about to finally bury the hatchet, but instead Steen says "After all we've been through.. you're still a piece of shit!" Then he flips off Generico and leaves. The Super Smash Bros and Generico & Willie pose in the ring together to a standing ovation.

Overall thoughts: The final three matches of the night make this show worth getting. The Callihan/Strong-Generico/Willie match is very good as well. There aren't any weak matches on this show as you would probably guess because PWG rarely has a bad show. This was a solid show throughout with The Super Smash Bros being the highlight of the night for me. They just kept getting better as the tournament went on. Really good show.
